The Transcontinental Heritage Vignette
Tracing how our founder's original English roots, spirited Spanish family, North American cousins, and uncles in New Zealand shaped every single line of code in Keepsake.
The ancestral hearth where parish registers, birth certificates, and generations of lineage first took form.
A vibrant, spirited multitude of abuelos, tíos, and primos celebrating lively reunions across Madrid and Andalusia.
Branches flourishing from coast to coast, bringing modern energy, diverse careers, and growing new generations.
Relatives thriving across Montreal, Ontario, and Vancouver, weaving bilingual heritage into the family tapestry.
The adventurous uncles who crossed the globe to start anew in Auckland and Canterbury, eleven thousand miles away.
The Problem with Traditional Genealogy
When you sit down to organize a family that spans continents, standard family tree apps instantly fall apart.
I opened the industry-standard software and immediately ran into frustrating walls:
- Language Exclusivity: English-only interfaces that stumbled over Spanish accents, maternal compound surnames, and multilingual kinship terms like abuelo or primo segundo.
- Geography Without Heart: Rigid pedigree trees that displayed my uncles in New Zealand as simple 2D text boxes, stripping away the awe-inspiring geography of their journey across the southern hemisphere.
- The "Stranger Overwrite" Crisis: Public wiki platforms where well-meaning distant relatives or complete strangers would log on and accidentally delete, overwrite, or detach my living relatives without consent.
- Perpetual Subscription Exhaustion: Multibillion-dollar corporate databases demanding $300 every year just to look at my own family tree, holding our memories hostage behind escalating paywalls.
How Our Family Shaped Keepsake's Architecture
Every single pillar of Keepsake was built directly to solve a real human problem encountered while tracing our own family:
The Spanish Family → Names and Languages
To make sure grandparents in Madrid and cousins in Seville see their names with dignity, Keepsake keeps accented names and double surnames exactly as typed. The app's top bar can already be switched to Spanish, French, German or Italian, and translating the rest of the app is on our roadmap.
The Pacific Leap → Spherical Heritage Map
When an uncle relocates to New Zealand, you need to feel the spatial scale of that journey. We engineered an offline Spherical Mercator heritage engine with tricolor event pins (Born, Lived, Died) and transcontinental migration trails connecting generational milestones.
American & Canadian Cousins → ADR-009 Proposal Queue
Cousins wanted to suggest wedding photos and birth dates, but letting everyone edit simultaneously leads to chaos. We invented the Staged Proposal Queue: relatives submit suggestions as proposals, and the author inspects a side-by-side visual diff before approving.
Deep English Roots → Lineage Folding
Researching several centuries back created sprawling charts with hundreds of nodes. We engineered tri-modal branch folding capsules and generational era swimlanes, allowing you to tuck in-law branches away until you want to explore them.
Family Reunions → Multi-Page Home Print Studio
For Christmas or reunion dinners, nobody wants to pass a smartphone around. We built the Interactive Print Studio with multi-page home poster tiling, slicing giant charts across standard A4/Letter paper with alignment cut-marks for easy assembly.
Ethical Ownership → The Lifetime Heirloom
Families shouldn’t face subscription fatigue. Beyond our generous 12-member free tier, we offer an honest, one-time £79.99 Lifetime Heirloom license. Your family history is yours forever—offline, exportable, and never held hostage.
Our Three Unbreakable Commitments
These values guide every architectural decision we make for Keepsake:
Your Data is Sovereign
We do not sell advertising, broker DNA, or harvest your relatives' details. All data is stored locally first, with universal GEDCOM import and open Pro archival exports whenever you need them.
Artistic Warmth Over Cold Tables
Every pixel is crafted to look and feel like an authentic heirloom—from warm parchment textures and circular portraits to gold foil accents and timeless typography.
Every Family is Welcome
Whether your lineage is simple or complex, blended or traditional, local or spanning five continents—Keepsake gives you the flexible stems, unions, and maps to celebrate it.
